In a heartwarming celebration of community and legacy, Lane Cove Public School on Sydney's Lower North Shore marked its 150th anniversary with a unique twist. Among the former students invited to participate was none other than Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman.
The school's birthday celebrations reached their peak on Friday with an open day, inviting former students and teachers back to the grounds to commemorate this significant milestone. While Kidman couldn't be there in person, she sent a heartfelt message from Santorini, Greece, which was played for the audience in the school hall.
"I wish I could be with you," Kidman said in her message. "I have fond memories of running around that playground and making friends that I still cherish today. I'm grateful for the foundation Lane Cove Public School provided me."
This heartfelt gesture was not the only highlight of the event. Hundreds of people, including former teachers and alumni, gathered to relive their school days. Among them was Channel Nine presenter Peter Overton, who served as school captain in 1977.
"I have so many happy memories of this school," Overton shared. "I'm grateful for the teachers who shaped my education and for the community that made Lane Cove Public School such a special place."
Meredith Lucas, a former classmate of Kidman's, also returned for the celebrations. She attended the school from kindergarten to year six and spoke fondly of their shared experiences.
"Lane Cove Public School was a tight-knit community," Ms. Lucas said. "We sang in the choir together, and I'm proud to see how far Nicole has come. Her success is a testament to her talent, hard work, and the supportive environment we had."
The school's principal, Terry McKinnon, expressed his pride in all the students, past and present, and particularly in Kidman.
"We're incredibly proud of Nicole and all our alumni," Mr. McKinnon said. "Her birthday message was a wonderful surprise and a testament to the impact this school has had on so many lives."
The school's official birthday was on January 14, 1876, and it has since become known for its creative arts and music programs.
